Is WordPress Causing Errors in Your Search Console (Webmaster Tools)?

If you’re using WordPress as a CMS for your website, be sure you’re doing a few simple things to your markup to avoid Google crawl errors pertaining to structured data (like hentry or hcard errors showing missing author, updated or entry-title designations for your structured data).  In particular, you’ll want to make sure if you include an hentry class for your individual posts (which is a WordPress default) that you also include the proper entry-title, author and updated designations to your markup.  If you don’t, you’ll end up with errors in Webmaster Tools (now called Google Search Console).

We recently found that WordPress based websites may often present incomplete structured data to Google’s search spiders.  This should not affect your organic rankings negatively by much, but it’s worth fixing because having this information can definitely have a positive impact on your rankings.

You’ll notice the errors (after selecting the site in question on your dashboard) in Search Console (Webmaster Tools) under Search Appearance > Structured Data. You will see errors saying that certain pages are:

Missing: author
Missing: entry-title
Missing: updated

It may look something like this within Search Console (Webmaster Tools):

Why This Happens

See these MUST KNOW quick tips now.These errors come because (at least in our case) we have a div section within individual posts that has hentry as a css declared class.  This indicates to Google that this page contains structured data that it can collect for use within search results.  Read more about Google’s structured data usage here.

The errors above simply mean that by using the hentry class, each post is signaling to Google that structured data is available on the page.  The problem is that we’re sending only a partial signal.  Digging into the errors shows us that we still need author, entry-title and updated designations to complete our structured data for the page.

How to Fix It

Fixing the errors can be as simple as adding span tags to your posts where the data shows up, complete with the proper CSS class for each.  I’d recommend searching your site files in the wp-content/themes/{mytheme} directory (where {mytheme} is the name of your theme) for the text “hentry” to get a sense of where the problem might be.

Keep in mind that the issue may spawn from multiple places in your site files and therefore may require updating multiple files.  In most cases, the “hentry” labeled element can be found in your single.php page template, unless you have your site configured to use different templates (in which case you will need to update all the php files that are used for displaying single posts).  I’ve even seen some sites include “hentry” class names for elements on category or archive pages.

Here is a simple example: on our page template (single.php) we had an <h2> tag containing the title like this:

<h2><?php the_title(); ?></h2>

We switched the code to include a class with entry-title like this:

<h2 class="entry-title"><?php the_title(); ?></h2>

This fixes the error by delivering the required entry-title markup designation to the appropriate data.

I then fixed the author error by finding the following (also in single.php):

<?php the_author(); ?>

and changing it to:

<span class="vcard author post-author"><span class="fn"><?php the_author(); ?></span></span>

Notice that the above markup wraps two span tags one inside the other.  That’s because vcard requires at least one child entity (in this case we used fn for field name).  This is enough to satisfy Google’s data demands.

Last, I found this:

<?php the_date(); ?>

And changed it to this:

<span class="post-date updated"><?php the_date(); ?></span>

How to Know If You Fixed It Correctly

Once you’ve done that, you can test your page on Google’s very handy structured data testing tool found here: You’ll need to be logged in to Search Console (Webmaster Tools) to access that page properly.

It should be as simple as that to get rid of those errors.  Please include comments if you’ve found a better way to do this, or have any feedback on your own issues with structured data.

  1. I am using twenty twelve theme and have the (missing author and missing updated) errors. I have a single.php file but none of the above listed are in that file. I checked functions.php also and did not find them there either.

  2. I submit my website in Google webmaster and whatever I post them all the same error is coming “Structured Data” and “Missing Author” .If anyone knows please help me…

    1. Check the date on the last crawl. It could be that you’re looking at the errors that came up before your site was recrawled.

      1. I found on function.php folowing:
        $result[] = sprintf( __(‘Published %2$s’, THEME_NS),
        sprintf( ‘%2$s’,
        esc_attr( get_the_time() ),
        case ‘author’:
        $result[] = sprintf(__(‘By %2$s’, THEME_NS),
        sprintf( ‘%3$s‘,
        get_author_posts_url( get_the_author_meta( ‘ID’ ) ),
        sprintf( esc_attr(__( ‘View all posts by %s’, THEME_NS )), get_the_author() ),

        Structure data error title and update. Please help to solve the issue. Will be glad if anyoen write code for me my site:

  3. many thanks for this post & author, very help to improve your rank on Google, I thinks many website or blog have get down the traffic because of this issue

    1. Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure if this has much effect on ranking, but I like to have clean webmaster tools reports, so the simple fix is worth it to me.

  4. Thanks for this article. I’ve managed to reduce my errors but not eradicate them completely.

    Most of my errors were coming from the Related Posts section. In my theme, this meant I had to edit related-posts.php. I don’t know how standardised that is, but the info may help someone.

  5. Hi, I’ve noticed that my errors also pertain to 2 pages I did not know even existed (most likely prior to using an seo plugin on wordpress that changed the urls). Is there a way to get rid of those duplicate pages?

    1. I’d be glad to take a look and see if I can help. Can you send me a url for the original page and the duplicate? That’ll give me the context to be able to answer your question.

  6. Nice, I was able to fix the most of the issue.. i Mean , on my WP Theme, How do i fix the above errors when they show up for related posts. I mean there is no error in the articles but bellow that, related post (in-built in theme) i am still getting errors. Moreover, same for Tags / Categories.

  7. Hi Peter Nice job and came here from google to fix this author Issue only i will do the changes as you said here ,If it worked fine or not worked fine i will come back again and comment .Thanks

  8. Hi,
    I use Elegant Theme – Foxy. I do not see
    and all other codes in single php. Please help me hoe to fix errors. I see this in webmaster tool:

    hentry Markup: Errors 56

  9. Hey Peter, thanks for the article.

    I had my computer guy take a look at my site as I have the error: missing “author” message. I run WP and Thesis theme on my site and he said he went thru all the php files and other files and wasn’t able to locate any loop_php, single_php or any other that contained the_time or the_title, etc.

    It appears I don’t have anything applicable to the entry titles in relation to Thesis. Could it be this only works on the WP’s basic themes? (my site is Insuranceblogbychris dot com.)

    Also, do you think this could be affecting my google authorship as that mysteriously disappeared from the search results in December.

  10. I am using twenty twelve theme and have the (missing author and missing updated) errors. I have a single.php file but none of the above listed are in that file.

    1. I have the same issue: none of the above fixes (nor a dozen others) apply to my twenty eleven theme. Yet, I still have the errors in the “hatom-feed” area of the google structured data tester:

      Error: Missing required field “updated”.
      Error: Missing required hCard “author”.

  11. Hi Peter!

    I have the same problem. I have 181 errors Missing: author. Missing: entry-title
    Missing: updated.
    I look in single.php but I don’t know where must to make the changes.

    This is my all content from single.php.

    get_header(); ?>

    Can you help me please? I use The 7 theme,

  12. Hi Peter
    This is something that has been niggling for quite a while. Webmaster Tools says I have 71 errors ier ‘Missing author’, ‘Missing entry-title’ and ‘Missing updated’.
    Using a custom theme in WordPress so not sure I want to meddle with code as it tends to break quite easy from past experience. Any advice/help on this would be great.

    1. Mike, it looks like you are using post-title as the class for your H1 tags on individual posts instead of entry-title. My guess is that it’s in your single.php file in your theme directory.

      Try changing this:

      <h1 class="post-title single">

      to this:

      <h1 class="post-title single entry-title">

      The other tags have similar problems. For example, where you have:

      <span class="meta-author">

      you should have:

      <span class="meta-author author">

      Wherever Google tells you you are missing something, you need to be sure you add a class to the element with the information (data) that corresponds to what Google says you are missing. Here’s your report I’m using:

  13. Hi peter , well i hope u see this and can help me a little please. i already fixed the entry title but no the update or author

    I found this

    ?php if(!x_options(‘disable-date’)){ ?>

    ?php if(!x_options(‘disable-author’)){ ?>

    I dont really know how should i fix those codes :$ i try some things but didnt work.

    If u can enlightme a little i would really apreciated. Thank you very much!

    1. That code does not look quite right. If your site does not have both a date and author showing for each post, you’ll want to create one and have it display with the proper designations (as shown in the post).

    1. Lori, it looks like you’ve got everything you need except for the “updated” because you don’t have that designated on your categories pages. I think you can fix this by adding the class “updated” to your archive.php or archives.php file. I looked at the link and each entry has a date, but it’s missing the class for updated. Your code on that page for the first entry (as of today) looks like this:
      <span class="date published time" title="2014-03-02T17:06:57+00:00">March 2, 2014</span>
      but it should look like this:
      <span class="date published time updated" title="2014-03-02T17:06:57+00:00">March 2, 2014</span>

  14. Hi Peter,

    Like the first post from Virgie Hamilton I am having the same problem using twenty twelve theme with missing author and missing updated errors

    do you have a solution of this theme?

    thnx in advance!

  15. I’m getting these messages from Google:Error: Missing required field “entry-title”.
    Error: Missing required field “updated”.
    Error: Missing required hCard “author”.

    I located the php files but I don’t see the code you mentioned.

    1. You may have different files used in your theme. Is it a custom theme? You may consider doing a search in your site files for the_author to see if it shows up somewhere else. Once you find the file with the_author in it, you’ll likely spot the others as well.

  16. Hi Peter,

    I am using a custom made theme twenty eleven and I have the same problem as the first post from Virgie Hamilton with “missing author and missing updated errors”. I also have a single.php file but none of the suggested is listed in that file. Also functions.php did not have the suggested either.

    Can you help me with the solution like you helped Virgie Hamilton?

    thanks in advance

    Sana Lazaro

    1. I suggest doing a search in your theme files for the_author to see if it shows up. Do you have a way to download the files to your computer so you can search through them?

      1. Thnx for your reply Peter,

        I have a twentytwelve theme and not a twenty eleven as I did mention before. Also I forgot to inform you about one other small detail.

        The index page has no errors at all – only at the other pages I get the 2 errors. Please check the 2 links below

        I have found the_author in content-status.php

        Hope this can give you more input to help me out and thanks in advance!

          1. I also have a Twenty Eleven theme and have looked in the pages as well as in the site for the_author with no luck! My other wordpress sites are fine with searches – can’t tell if its a problem with this theme or something else is wrong that I can’t find? Your help is very much appreciated!! Thank you!

  17. Hello! Thanks for the great post. I was able to fix majority of my errors. The missing author and missing updated went away on the posts but are still showing up on the pages. I checked the Page Template but did not find an author code or an updated code to change. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

  18. Thanks for this. I’d already fixed my author and entry-title errors but was unsure of how to fix the updated one. Applied the fix today so hoping my errors start to decrease when my site is next crawl by google.

    Thanks again!

    1. Make sure you update other pages on your site that use entry-title, author or other class names that might create these errors. The best way to find these pages is by doing a global search on all the pages in your website using Dreamweaver, Coda, a terminal (command line) or some other search tool. It’s likely that you’ve got to still update your archive.php file with the same fixes you did elsewhere.

  19. This seems really and helpful.. I have tried to make the changes on but no success so far.. can you help with this?

  20. So, this took me a while as it seems that WP has undergone some changes in the way single posts are displayed.

    I too noticed the problem on the Google structured data testing tool, though in my case there was juste the field “updated” missing. As I use the twenty thirteen theme from the WP distribution, my single.php is quite empty. I took a look at the source of the page and founda function responsible for doing the formatting of single posts: twentythirteen_entry_date in functions.php. The relevant line of code is "$date = sprintf( '%4$s',". I added just the word “updated” so it now reads : $date = sprintf( '%4$s',.

    I did another check in the Google tool, and the error message was gone.

    1. Hi Thomas, i got the same problem with the same theme. Can you please post the whole sprintf for that issue. i found the line in function.php but i did not know where i must add that “post-date updated” for that.
      Thank you!

  21. Sorry, there was a problem with the code-tag. The line should read:

    Original version:
    $date = sprintf( ‘%4$s‘,
    esc_url( get_permalink() ),
    esc_attr( sprintf( __( ‘Permalink to %s’, ‘twentythirteen’ ), the_title_attribute( ‘echo=0’ ) ) ),
    esc_attr( get_the_date( ‘c’ ) ),
    esc_html( sprintf( $format_prefix, get_post_format_string( get_post_format() ), get_the_date() ) )

    Updated version:
    $date = sprintf( ‘%4$s‘,
    esc_url( get_permalink() ),
    esc_attr( sprintf( __( ‘Permalink to %s’, ‘twentythirteen’ ), the_title_attribute( ‘echo=0’ ) ) ),
    esc_attr( get_the_date( ‘c’ ) ),
    esc_html( sprintf( $format_prefix, get_post_format_string( get_post_format() ), get_the_date() ) )

  22. Help! I have around 190 Missing:Author errors. My web designer has given up and told me it will just ‘work itself out’. I paid for a customised theme in WordPress. When I run my site through Rich Snippets Tools, it shows it’s fine, except for email verification. I would really like to get rid of these errors. My url is
    Any help you can give me is GREATLY appreciated.

  23. Hi Peter! I do need your help! I’ve found on webmaster tools that I have 27 errors: missing author, missing updated. I’m using a child theme and I searched for the code you wrote in your post inside the parent theme but it doesn’t exist. Then I cannot change parent theme to not to lose all the updates. What can I solve these issues? 🙁

  24. Hi peter!
    Thank you for your amazing article. I’ve still got 67 Hentry (All of my posts) errors – Missing “Updated”. I have tried to find the right code in my single.php but couldn’t find it as stated on your site. Are you willing to have a look at my site in order to help me. Probably best to check out one of the posts.

    Thank you in advance!

  25. We recently redid our blog and updated to the 2012 version with the same look as our website last week Friday. How long does it normally take Google Webmaster Tools to crawl again in order to determine if all of these structured data errors are gone? If not I’m not sure how to fix as the information is not listed in our single.php to change.

  26. Got it working finally! For those who can’t find it in single.php, try finding something similar .. Just remove the code and replace it with the ones given by Peter. Also change the span.title to span.entry-title in stylesheet.

  27. Im having problems getting the missing updated and author cant figurew out how to fix it my url is please help ive tried everything

  28. I have had this issue on my site. This article helped me fix it. But for all the WP newbies like me. If you are having the issue on pages rather than posts you need to make the changes the appropriate page.php.

  29. Hi , I am using thezeenews theme , i am getting the error

    Error: Missing required field “updated”.
    Error: Missing required hCard “author”.

    I didn’t find any the_date() & the_author() in my theme’s php files. Any idea how to resolve this issue.

    Thanks in advance

  30. Hi Peter!
    I’m using a site (Forever theme) and can therefore only edit the CSS. I tried inputing your code but was still given the error “Missing: updated” in Google Webmaster tools under structured data. I’m kind of a coding newbie so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Hi, Lolly! Thanks for the reply. You’ll need to be able to update the HTML for your theme to fix the errors. Contact us if you need professional assistance with it. We’d be happy to check it out.

  31. dear sir i am using ipin pro theme and getting errors
    Missing: author
    Missing: updated.

    i am unable to find the date and author in my files. can you please help me to find these and resolve the problem,

  32. This is by far the best guide I’ve found for this, I’ve successfully added the title element as above but when I add the date and author elements it’s showing the generated author/date text on the website in plain text. Is it possible to generate this for Google spiders only and not show it on the website?

        1. Hi! Great tips – thanks. Helping me fix over 1000 SEO errors (the same 3 errors on all of over 350 of my pages). For me, 2 of the three functions were found in my functions.php file. The other was in my loop-single.php page.

          So here’s what I did to fix it (which is just a modification of this post’s directions – custom for my theme): –Screenshot attached to this post–

          1) For the entry-title, this was easy. In my loop-single.php file, I found the_title just below a DIV element with the “post_content” class. Changed this easily to what the author of this article suggested. Done.

          2) the_author. This was not found at all in my theme. Instead, I found a custom version of this in my theme’s functions.php file. I only was able to find this because I’m experienced with PHP code. Try and look for unique text that your theme outputs just before the Author, such as the word “Posted” in my theme. So I found the block of text in my functions.php file near the word “Posted” (which was only found 1 time). Then near the word “Posted” I looked through the code and see my theme uses its own function to retrieve the author. So I just added the HTML code the author of this article suggested – before and after my theme retrieves the author.

          3) Same with date as #2 above. I added the code before and after my theme’s custom way of getting the date.

          Then finally inspected the page with Google Chrome’s “View Source” to make sure the HTML was being output properly. Yes, correct. Then I used the Google Code Snippet checker to verify all my stuff was good. All good!

          Thanks again for this helpful article.

          1. Thanks for pointing it out. I handle all this myself. This is a page I missed. Just old Visual composer code which I haven’t finished cleaning up.

  33. Hi,
    if i do some changes in my wordpress website should i need to resubmit my xml sitemap on google webmaster tool? please i need help to solve this problem on my website Thanks.

  34. Thanks for the article – it helped me fix the errors – but some information to add. I’m using an older theme – Atahualpa342. Like others (I suspect) it doesn’t have the code directly in the php files.
    In the case of the title – the theme calls a function post_class in wp-includes/post-template.php (which is general wordpress code)/ So the solution was to add the in the theme round the echoing of the title. I found this location by searching for the position in the theme code where it called the function post_class..
    In the case of the author and update these were sorted by altering options for the theme for the byline and date respectively. Hope this helps. As the post says the data testing tool confirms that you have/haven’t fixed it.

  35. Hi,
    Thank you for sharing this post….i want to know google webmaster showing 70 of my pages are index and graph shows straight vertical line what does it means do anyone know about this?

  36. i am using wpestate theme on factorypk and getting the error of
    missing :updated
    missing :author
    in google webmaster. i ready your article and try to found all above codes in my,, function.php etc but nowhere found that code. Guide me to solve this problem ASP. Thanks in advance.

    1. You may just need to fix the data entry to include the “updated” class on the tag that displays your date. It’s the last part of the article above.

  37. Very useful article! I solved this issue adding a code in functions.php but I have to solve “missing updated” for categories. What code should I add in functions.php file? Thanks!

    1. I’ve seen comments about this recently. Can you tell me what code you uploaded to functions.php? That would help me understand what might be causing your remaining issue.

    2. I’ve seen comments about this recently. Can you tell me what code you uploaded to functions.php? That would help me understand what might be causing your remaining issue.

      1. Hi Peter!!! Thanks! Here is the code I added in functions.php of my child theme:

        //mod content
        function hatom_mod_post_content ($content) {
        if ( in_the_loop() && !is_page() ) {
        $content = ”.$content.”;
        return $content;
        add_filter( ‘the_content’, ‘hatom_mod_post_content’);

        //add hatom data
        function add_mod_hatom_data($content) {
        $t = get_the_modified_time(‘F jS, Y’);
        $author = get_the_author();
        $title = get_the_title();
        if ( is_single() || is_page()) {
        $content .= ”.$title.’ was last modified: ‘.$t.’ by ‘.$author.”;
        return $content;
        add_filter(‘the_content’, ‘add_mod_hatom_data’);

        1. Hi Maria,
          Did you find a solution for the problem “missing update” for categories? Would be much appreciated if you could share. I have the same problem. Thank you.

  38. Technically, you should tell Google when the post was last updated, not created:

    <p>Last modified: <span class="post-date updated"><?php the_modified_date(); ?></span></p>

  39. Hello,
    I am using oxygen theme on wordpress. I didn’t find the location to put the code to resolve Error: Missing Updated about 4 months ago.

    Please help me to resolve it.

    Screenshot below of my error list…

  40. Thank you so much for this article. I’ve had lots of “trouble” because google search console would keep producing errors, not for individual blog posts but for the gallery pages like
    Using this article I was able to exactly find out where things went wrong. Fortunately, there was nothing to fix in the theme code because displaying author info was handled by the theme – turns out I had missed a setting that would display the author information not only on single articles but also on pages. TL;DR: Check if your theme offers to put the author bio/info on all pages.

  41. Hi, I have the same problem with theme – twenty fifteen, but don’t find single.php or another mentioned file:( How I should fix it?

  42. can some1 help me in resolving this issue??? i’ll be grateful to him/her. 🙂 it is just that i’m a newbie so i dont know a lot about single.php css or whatever,,i hope u understands 🙂 thanksss

  43. Thank you for sharing this article. Really helpful. My website, too is facing the issue. Your article will surely help me resolving the issue. Will let you know soon. Thanks again.

  44. A perfect article to fix the headche issues. Hats off to you dear admin for this post where every newbie find the solution very easily. Once again thanks for your best work. 45. Thanks for this! I have fixed almost all the Errors now 🙂
    However has anyone experienced the following weirdness

    I have hentry errors appearing but instead of any missing:author etc. I just get a hyphen and no information? Any Ideas what that could be? (see attached picture).

  46. I am thinking about purchasing this plugin but have a question. Does this plugin work for all the errors?

    Missing: author
    Missing: entry-title
    Missing: updated

    1. I’m using Pinboard too. In functions.php replace:

      span class=”date”>
      span class=”date updated published”>

      I was able to fix missing:updated in posts but not in blog/page/XX/ (where I am also getting the missing: author).

  47. hi i have change my theme to universal education theme and after that i am having problem in structured data which shows followings error

  55. Great article and hopefully it works! I tested a page that was giving errors before I made the changes and the Structured Data Testing Tool didn’t pick up any errors, but I can see the errors in GWT. I went ahead and made the changes and will see if GWT picks them up – fingers crossed.

  58. Good Evening,

    Love this plugin, works great for pages and posts. We are trying to develop it another step further to recognize categories, archives, tag pages etc. It currently doesn’t pull the data for those areas. We have developed the following code and are testing. It works in part:

    public function add_structured_data_category($content) {
    $t = get_the_modified_time(‘F jS, Y’);
    $author = get_the_author();
    $title = get_queried_object();
    if ( is_category()){
    $content .= ‘ © Copyright 2017 xxxxxxxx All Rights Reserved | Designed by Company‘.$title->name.’ was last modified: ‘.$t.’ by ‘.$author.”;
    echo $content;

    We are seeing the entry name recognized and part of the ‘fn’ for the author however the author is not being seen in hentry only a partial ‘fn’ hcard entry. Also the update time is not being pulled at all. Quite frustrating and have spent a few days trying to work the kinks out. This code shows properly on the site but does not pull in the Google Webmasters Structured Data Tool. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in Advance,

    Dan Richardson
